The Mess at the Buffalo Bills Starts at the Front Office

Are discipline, responsibility, and accountability lost concepts in the NFL?

After the teams 3 wins, 6 loses start, the Buffalo Bills Football team announced it has fired Head Coach Dick Jauron. His record since being hired is 24 wins and 33 loses.

As their replacement to Coach Jauron, the Bills hired team defensive co-coordinator, Perry Fewell. Coach Fewell does not have head coaching experience, on any level.

If you don’t know, since the end of the 2000 season, the Bill’s have hired and fired 4 head coaches.

Commentary:
Hey, Bill’s front office!

Do you guys see anything wrong with this picture?
How can you wonder why or how this is happening to your organization?
Do you have a disciplined process in place to select key people?
Is this operation run by knee jerk reaction?

Apparently, the problem starts at the top. Judging by the undisciplined approach to picking a head coach, it seems there is little discipline in your organization at the highest levels. Looking at your previous four choices, it seems you are selecting the first person available.

What about it Mr. Russ Brandon? Are you not the guy responsible and accountable for these decisions? Are you not the GM?

Well, this decision sounds like a snap, knee jerk reaction to fire Coach Jauron and a worse knee jerk decision to select Coach Fewell.

We hope Coach Fewell great success but Mr. Brandon you have some accounting to do regarding your leadership, organizational and management skills.

For heavens sake why not pick your doctor or your attorney to run the team…they do not have any head coaching experience either.

I think New England should hire all the Bills former coaches–then maybe the Dolphins will have a chance.

I don’t know the next coach to be fired. Some that deserve to be fired actually deserve it –others do not. But, I expect that the next coach to be fired will be blamed for things he could not be expected to control.

Most likely the next fired coach will leave behind a string of losses. Perhaps he had a highly regarded team that “blew it.” Perhaps a “coming” team that did not measure up, or even a poor team that didn’t show any spark or hope for the future. Whatever, he didn’t win enough games to satisfy the rabid fans, the critics on ESPN, or the embarrassed owner.

Even “great” coaches get fired. Don Shula coached the only Perfect Season football team, won a number of Super Bowls with several teams, and managed the careers of many football Hall-of-Famers. He had record-making Dan Marino as his quarterback for many years, but ownership was without resources or too cheap to give the team a running game to go with a first-class passing option. Finally, in Shula’s final years, the ownership brought in a number of free agent xxxxx carriers meant to complement Marino’s wasted talent, but the team did not gel. It seems that talent is not enough if you do not also have “chemistry.” By then Shula’s time had run. Shula, who won enough to compete for the playoffs most years, was not able to win “big” any more. Technically, he was not “fired.” He was strongly encouraged to decide for himself that it was the time to retire. Nevertheless, Shula was “fired” for reasons beyond his control. Measured against his own standard, he was unable to win “any more.” “Too old,” “too predictable,” “out of touch.” Even his fans lost hope in him.

That is, I think, the key ingredient for a coach, or for a leader in any position: HOPE! The leader must instill hope of success, confidence of victory, not necessarily today but ultimately. That is why the coach of a young football team with potential that unexpectedly wins only eight games and misses the playoffs can hold his job while the coach of veteran team that failed to win in the playoffs may lose his.

The leader does not control the circumstances in which he is thrust, but he must give direction to those about him. He must inspire and show the way. He must instill HOPE!
