In a long war, many battles may be lost on the way to victory. And to quote General MacArthur, "There is no substitute for victory!" In football, victory means winning the Super Bowl. No matter how good your team, if it fails to win all its playoff games, it will be soon forgotten. Victory comes in February, not some meaningless game in November or December. The early games are just battles on the way to victory. Once the coach has positioned his team for ultimate victory, he should not risk his advantage on meaningless battles that may rob him of his resources. O.K., Dr. John — good point.
