Two simple questions. Leave us your thoughts.
- Would it be worse/better if Tiger were caught cheating at the Masters?
- What are you going to tell your children when they ask about Tiger?

I think it would be worse for the sport of golf if this recent transgression occured during the Masters. As it occured the way it did, hopefully its more of a reflection on Woods' character, than bring the sport down with him. I cringe every time I hear about an NFL player having some off field screwup, as these people are in a position to greatly influence our kids and some of them squander it away, often foolishly and without thinking of consequences. That being said, there are still plenty of great role models in professional sports, but unfortunately the media runs away with the negative stories and bombard our kids with an onslought of how people arent perfect and makes every minute/tasteless detail fodder for the water cooler and dinner table, while the do gooders carry much less spotlight and receive much less credit.
If my daughter were older, and she did ask about it, I'd tell her exactly what I thought. We dont have all the facts, dont buy everything the media sells you, question everything, and dont be too quick to judge. After all that, I think that he is an adult who made a (or several) poor decisions, and now he will have to navigate the consequences, which will have a lifelong impact on his family, his career, and up until now, his virtually untarnished reputation as a professional. Learn from his example and lets all move forward. At the end of the day no one is perfect, and we can only hope to do the best despite ourselves. Life may not always offer second chances, but we as a culture sure do love a comeback, and we're always ready to forgive, if the person who erred is worth it.

Great reply Rwilbanks, but I think I must clarify the first question.
I know the question said “if Tiger Woods were caught cheating at the Masters” but I meant something completely different.
The question is supposed to read…
What if Tiger Woods was caught cheating at golf while playing in the Masters?
Would that be worse or better for him than cheating on his wife.
Would people care as much?

If Tiger cheated at golf he would lose a billion dollars in endorsement money over the next 3 to 5 years. By then , maybe sooner, his “handlers” would have a plan to rehabilitate his image and to recover the money. Not so for the average guy or average golfer.
Tell your kids that the world is not perfect and neither is Tiger nor our other idols. Our job as parents, teachers, coaches and mentors is to do our best to live up to high standards and ethical conduct. This means not lying, cheating or stealing and more. Remember your kids are watching YOUR behavior. They copy the behavior they see…good and bad.
Is the Tiger Woods story important? The answer depends on your moral/social/political/religious view of the world. On the surface it is just a titillating sex scandal. Under the surface are lessons we all can learn. The lessons are up to you to engage, ignore or to debate.

Is this scandal any worse than the Kobi Bryant incident in the summer of 2003. He was accused of not only of cheating on his wife and breaking social norms, but was also accused of much worse, actually breaking the law. I will not say any more than that, you can look it up.
It seems, more than five years later, that no one cares or remembers and Kobi is idolised now more than ever.
What happened to poor Andre Agassi, his admission of meth use in his new book Open, seems a bit like ancient history. Sorry Andre, but you picked the wrong week to release a new book.
Is all this just media hype? Is it just a way to sell papers, or is it a way to keep us distracted from the real issues confronting us?

No, it would be the same…a lot of hype, crying, and BS. The 69 ESPN channels would then have something for the 1000's of guys who never played a sport to talk about for a few days. Then, other cheaters would come out of the woodwork looking for a book deal, reality show and/or a few minutes standing under Tiger's money tree, picking the low handing fruit.
I'm glad we don't watch golf. Is it a sport?
Yea, in five years he'll be just like Kobi… no, six months, he'll be back. No one will care and I still will have never purchased any of the products that Tiger endorsed.
The American memory is shorter than its attention span…Any one remember Sept 11, didn't think so.

I agree, this will be over in less than six months. Anybody remember Bernie Madoff? I just saw him on TV.
I am just glad my boy is young and I don't have to answer any hard questions. Hopefully, he will know and hopefully I will be able to teach him that just because you can hit a ball or run fast that it does not make you a role model.

I think you guys are correct.
Number one, he is not a role model, he plays golf.
Number two, it seems the scandal is already over and no one cares. Tiger lost a few bucks and probably gained a few grey hairs and will be no worse for the wear. Time will tell and it also heals wounds.

“Cheated at the masters or on his wife.” Who cares, is there anybody that is not on medicare out there that even watches golf. Yes, that means anybody below the age of say Abe Lincoln.
Golf along with its followers is a dying sport. Tune in and try to stay awake long enough (Its tough, between the whispering announcers and the long walks…”Let's go join Hal on the 5th green” Aggh) to watch the commercials. Viagra, Cialis, Flo-max, Porches or Corvette…the commercials are for guys who either are losing control of their penis or already lost control of it completely.
It would seem that all those sponsors would be lining up to sign Tiger. I not that smart, but isn't want he did what the commercials are selling. It would seem that they (the sponsors) would want someone like Tiger. I guy who's penis works, that has the prowess to to go and do something even close to what he was accused of. Man, now that's marketing…it would back up all those commercials and all those geriatrics could call that young buck a hero, god or Tiger.

Hey Brennan, You might want to re-think your comments. There are lessons to be learned from Tiger. Remember, “Any fool can learn from his own experience, a wise man [woman] learns from the experience of others.” Tiger will undoubtedly lose his wife and children, and a lot of respect and money over his destructive behavior. Moreover his behavior was not a “mistake” but activity that was planned, managed and controlled much like a clandestine military operation and conducted over a long period of time. Now there is talk about Tiger's buff (muscular )body and accusations of steroid or other performance enhancing drugs. This story is not over by any means.

At least for the short term Tiger is no longer the 'darling' of the media. Recently a magazine cover displayed a picture of Tiger working out at the gym. Comments are being made that he is awfully buff for a golfer. Steroids??? Rumors about sex tapes are floating around. This will be worse when Tiger plays golf again. When Tiger comes back if he does not win at least one or two of his first five golf tournaments the stories will be: “Tiger has lost his concentration, etc.” If he wins the story is over until the next time he loses at golf or misbehaves. In any event Tiger's privacy is gone until the time his golf skills diminish and he is no longer a front page story. In the meantime Tiger needs a major overhaul of his image of which I am certain his people are working on now. Do not be surprised to see him become an advocate for a major charity, perhaps, The Make a Wish Foundation. Am I too cynical , you decide. Dr. John

Tiger is a liar and a cheat. Nuff said! All you guys out there need to ask your mother, sister or girlfriend for their thoughts. Holy Smokes are you guys all that dumb. He stinks. No addiction, just lack of character.
That's enough about that. Clara

Clara, you are pretty hard on Tiger. Granted men and woman may have a different view of his behavior, but they do on many issues. Yes Tiger is flawed like many of us, but he appears to be trying to save his marriage and family. This story will be playing out for at least a year so lets wait and see. In the meantime the rest of us can do the best job we can of being effective role models and leaders to our children. One of the ways is to limit response to problems with emotion and to replace emotional response with reasonable thought.
Best wishes Clara.
