On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your parenting skills and decisons?
Do you think that you are a better or more dedicated parent than your parents or the parents in your community?

I'd like to say I'm a 10 but realistically speaking I don't think anyone can say they are a 10. We all make mistakes and try to do the best we can with the information we are given. So, I'll say I am an 8 or at least I hope I am when it comes to my parenting skills and decision-making. In some ways I do think that I am a better parent than my parents but not more dedicated than they were. In my community, i have seen all types ….some that are very dedicated, some that are too dedicated and some that are not dedicated at all. I think it's good to be somewhere in between. The bottom line is to try and not compare yourself to others, just love your children and make them feel safe.

I think I'm about a strong 6 or 7. Because sometimes I give too much leeway to my kid and allow him to get into things, places or situations and try to get out of things for himself. You know, let the little guy build a little self-esteem.
Better or more dedicated than my parents…no way, I try to be just as good as they were. Time will tell what the future holds…med school or jail.
I will not comment on other parents. People are different, my dad always told me “That is why Baskin's has 31 flavors.”

JAMIE AND OTHERS; JUST BE THE BEST PARENT YOU CAN BE. BE CONSIDERATE OF YOUR KIDS AND TELL THEM YOU LOVE THEM…AND OFTEN. SET APPROPRIATE STANDARDS FOR THEM AND ROLE MODEL THE BEHAVIOR YOU DESIRE IN YOUR KIDS. BE FAIR. ANY FOOL CAN BE A STRICT PARENT.BE THE TYPE OF PARENT YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE IF YOU WERE A CHILD. EMULATE OTHER PARENTS OR WORK SUPERVISORS THAT YOU ADMIRE.REMEMBER YOUR CHILDREN ARE WATCHING AND COPYING YOUR BEHAVIOR. LEAD BY EXAMPLE,ENJOY YOUR FAMILY, AND RELAX. YOU ARE PROBABLY FINE.

This is Clara the divorced mother whose son was bullied. That issue had me questioning my parenting skills. I guess I needed the right man in my life for support. With his help I'm not as bad as I thought. Actually my son is doing pretty good. Not bullied at school anymore and is much more popular. What did I do? Stop bulling him at home. Encouraged him. I also stopped seeing my ex husband in his face and love him for who he is. And I tell him often how much I love him. He has become A GREAT KID.
Suggestions appreciated, Clara.

Sometimes I think I'm a 10 at parenting. Other times I think I'm about as bad as they come. “Here kid play with these matches, careful you may get burned.”
So on average I would rate my parenting at about a 6-7, the good part is I know I have no idea what I'm doing sometimes. I need to think about this more.

My persoanl skills might be kind of suspect… seeing how I told my son that we were gonna “rob the bank today”!!! This robbing involved us going into the establishment and introducing ourselves first. I then told the nice lady I would like to make a withdrawl. My son coohed and giggled and all the tellers loved it. The next thing you know, we were walking out with a big stack on money. So I guess my “robbing the bank” might give him something possitive to look back on when he's older. But then again, I think he'll forget it by morning!!!

My kid has good days and bad. I try to be a good parent but I struggle. I also work and money is a problem. I think he is spending too much time with his girl friend and I worry about children. He idolizes my boy friend. Should I talk to him or have my boy friend talk to him? I'm not too comfortable talking about sex with him.

Clara, your son probably knows more about sex than you give him credit for. I seem to remember your boyfriend is a retired coach. If you believe he has the expertise, ask him to speak to your son. If not, the library has many informative books on the subject. Check with his school to see if they provide sex education classes.Teenagers and sex is a touchy subject. Be respectful and polite. Depending on your son's maturity he may be very uuncomfortable with this issue. Like most issues in life there are many ways to address the topic. Find the one right for you and your son. There is no single right way.

I stay insecure about myself and my son. I try. Things get better but I constantly worry. My son is getting older and wants to spend less time with me. Am I the problem or what? By the way I love the forum. You have been very helpful in the past. Thanks everybody.
Clara.
